The visit of Mayor John Tory to “The Arab Community Centre of #Toronto” in City Efforts to Assist Refugees
The Mayor’s visit is part of the City’s efforts to support refugee resettlement programs as it works to welcome 15,000 refugees this year. Mayor Tory has expressed confidence in Toronto’s capacity to welcome the Syrian refugees who will be joining our communities and has urged Torontonians to continue to welcome newcomers with open arms stating: “That has been our strength, as we have embraced newcomers and they have responded with hard work and with accomplishment. And the Syrians will be no different if we welcome them with generosity and support as we have always done with newcomers in the past.”

The Arab Community Centre of Toronto (ACCT) is one of the city’s community organizations and settlement agencies that is mobilizing support systems for refugees and assisting newcomer refugee families. As a settlement agency of over 40 years, the ACCT has a long history of welcoming and supporting refugee newcomers to Canada.
The ACCT’s Executive Director, Ms. Huda Bukhari re-iterated Mayor Tory’s confidence saying: “It is important to act quickly, and we will be expanding our existing programs to support and resettle refugees in the increased numbers this coming year. With the coordination and support of the City of Toronto and other partners, we can rise up to this great challenge.”
