Mobile Mapping w/ the New Google Maps Android API v2
Coming all the way from Mountain View, California, Paul Saxman fromGoogle will share with us the latest version of the Google Maps Android API.
The new Google Maps Android API v2, which is automatically distributed to Android devices via the Google Play Services, allows developers to embed interactive maps in their apps that include many of the key map features of the Google Maps for Android app. Developers now have access to maps that tilt and rotate (vector-based 3D!), show interior floor plans, support animated camera positioning, and that make it dead simple to overlay custom content. During the breakout session, Paul will walk developers through the process of getting started with the Google Maps Android API v2, and he’ll share some tips and tricks for making mobile mapping fun and compelling to users.

Rapid Prototyping Tools
A growing trend in many businesses large and small is the creation of a Research and Development department that works outside the traditional scope of the organization’s day-to-day business needs. One such R&D department is Teehan+Lax Labs, a small independent unit within Teehan+Lax, tasked with exploring the creative uses of technology in the digital channel and framing technical possibilities for the agency, clients, and wider community.
Peter Nitsch is Director of Teehan+Lax Labs and will join us at the the Samsung Office Hours Toronto to talk about his experience running Labs. His breakout session will be on rapid prototyping tools that can be used for creating the next generation of mobile experiences.

A Software Architecture for Data Driven Android Apps
Currently, Async tasks are common place in modern Android app architectures to fetch data from a RESTful server API. However, there is a different approach where Async tasks can be replaced by the Service class.
In this presentation, Kelum Peiris from The Working Group will look at architectural considerations for developing data driven Android apps, and strategies for designing an app architecture that can be extended or changed at low risk. The breakout session will include a skeleton app where attendees can download and add features to gain hands-on experience on this new architecture.
