Subscribers
· The number of mobile subscribers worldwide stood at almost 6 billion at end-2011. The subscriber base is forecast to increase at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.3 percent between 2011 and 2016, to reach nearly 8.5 billion by end-2016.
· This growth will be led by markets in Asia Pacific and Africa. During the period 2011-2016, the subscriber base of Asia Pacific is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9 percent; African markets will witness a CAGR of 9.4 percent during the same period.
· The advanced markets of North America and Western Europe are approaching saturation, with most of the markets having close to or more than 100 percent mobile penetration.[1]
· Mobile subscribers worldwide are gradually shifting to 3G and higher networks, and users in these segments are forecast to account for around 60 percent of total subscribers by end-2016, compared to 26 percent at end-2011.
Portio Research forecasts that:
– there will be 6.5 billion mobile subscribers worldwide by end-2012
– the worldwide mobile subscriber base will now grow at a CAGR of 7.3 percent between 2011 and 2016, to near 8.5 billion by end-2016
– worldwide annual handset shipments will exceed 1.67 billion at end-2012, 125 million more than that in 2011
– worldwide annual handset shipments will reach 2.15 billion by end-2016
– smartphone shipments in 2012 will account for almost 40 percent of total worldwide handset shipments
– smartphones will account for the majority of worldwide handset shipments by end-2016
– mobile services generated over USD 1.3 trillion in revenues worldwide in 2011, and that this revenue is now expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.3 percent between 2011 and 2016, to hit nearly USD 1.8 trillion by end-2016
– the worldwide mobile market will generate total service revenues of nearly eight trillion US dollars over the next five years
– subscriber growth in the 2011-2016 period will be led by markets in Africa and Asia Pacific; with respective projected regional level CAGRs of 9.4 and 9 percent
– the Top 10 markets by mobile subscriber additions (to 2016) will add 1,807 million subscribers over the next five years
– the leading markets (by growth in subscriber numbers) are China (633.4 million), India, Indonesia, Brazil, Egypt, Pakistan, The US, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Iran (55.1 million additions)
– these same markets, measured as CAGR (2011-2016): Egypt leads (with 16.7 percent), followed by Oman, Sudan, Bangladesh, Mozambique, Iran, Pakistan, China, Uganda, and Nigeria (9.9 percent)
– frustratingly, mobile ARPU is declining worldwide due to the increased acquisition of new users from low-value and rural segments, fierce price competition, and commoditisation of voice and messaging services
– mobile equipment spend is expected to reach USD 56.3 billion at end-2012, recording a year-on-year growth rate of 3.6 percent
– annual worldwide equipment will exceed USD 68 billion in 2016.
