Team Canada has won its third and fourth medals of Beijing 2022, courtesy of Max Parrot and Mark McMorris in slopestyle snowboard.
Parrot secured the gold in snowboard slopestyle on Monday at the Beijing Olympics, upgrading from the silver he won at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. Fellow Canadian Mark McMorris earned bronze in the event for the third consecutive time, while China’s Su Yiming took silver.
After the first run, Parrot was in third, McMorris in fifth, and Toutant in seventh. American Red Gerrard, the reigning Olympic champion, held onto first place with 83.25 points.
In his second run, Parrot cleaned up his execution and got the points to match, earning 90.96 from the judges. He was the first rider to break the 90-point mark in the competition, while McMorris scored 88.53 points. China’s Su Yiming took silver with a score of 88.70.
Sebastien Toutant of L’Assomption, Que., was ninth with a score of 54.00. Toutant won gold in the big air event in 2018 and will defend his title starting Feb. 14.
At a news conference ahead of the Olympics, Parrot said his outlook on sports, and on life, changed post-cancer.
“Every time I step on my snowboard, I smile twice as much as before and it just transplanted into my training,” he said.
