CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM REACHES OUT TO FANS ONLINE
With exclusive content on various digital platforms, and #GiveYourEverything hashtag, the Canadian Olympic Team gives fans opportunity to support athletes online
LONDON, England – In what has been deemed ‘the most social Games ever’, the Canadian Olympic Committee today launched its first ever “Canada Cheers” app today as part of its Give Your Everything campaign. The app on iPhone and Android platforms, gives Canadians more opportunities to support our athletes no matter where they live.
The app will send Team Canada-related notifications to our nation’s fans so they can share their support for the team by tweeting, posting and sharing. What makes it unique is that when a major event happens at the Olympics, the COC can send a tweet (or cheer) and that tweet gets pushed to everyone’s app. Then each user can simply re-tweet the cheer to cause the hash tags (#giveyoureverythingcanada) to trend and make Canadians feel part of something bigger.
The app also features exclusive wallpaper downloads, Canadian Olympic-specific hashtag tracking, and access to Canadian Olympic Team/athlete’s social media posts all in one digital hub.
“For our core fans who follow the Canadian Olympic Team, digital is the backbone of their lives,” said Canadian Olympic Committee Chief Marketing Officer Derek Kent. “We wanted to create simple, digital tools to enable real, two way conversations to help show support for our athletes and that is exactly what we did.”
The newly redesigned Olympic.ca website has shown a major increase in traffic since its launch in May, and large positive spikes in its Facebook engagement and Twitter followers. Olympic.ca is acting as a central hub for Canadian Olympic news, results, stories, photos and comment on both the sport stage and the Canadian-specific energy around it – especially around the athletes. In the lead up to the Games, the Canadian Olympic Team is also using Instagram to show Canadians a look behind the scenes of the biggest show in the world – the Olympic Games.
“Canadians have shown us they want to get behind this Team,” said Kent. “This app is our way of showing fans they deserve every opportunity share support for our amazing Canadian Olympic Team athletes who will lay it all on the line on the biggest sporting stage on earth.”
Proximity Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee agency of record helped design and support this new app.
